If you are a fan of lifelong learning you are likely to be interested in the current councillors` answers to the question: “what professional development have you done this term?”  Overall, for this three year term our elected representatives` uptake of learning opportunities seems skimpy.

Courses, conferences and seminars are an opportunity to learn about developing issues, hear of good practice elsewhere and connect with movers and shakers around the country.

The next council could be more purposeful around professional development and encourage councillors to embrace learning.  Another council only pays for councillor’s course/seminar costs once they write a report to council. Others provide informal feedback opportunities so that the learning is shared and discussed.
